Park near Old Church and walk along side of church down a lane to Hillhouse Wood. Part of the 2% of ancient woodland in GB. Also known as bluebell wood. Springtime, you can smell the wild garlic. There are 3 entrances/exits. There’s a stream and lovely views over surrounding farmland. No roads around. The woodland is lightly fenced. There are routes through the woods. You can return on the same track or exit at the far end (not the Fordham exit) and follow the footpath along the farmers field and turn left at the end into a farm track (part of Essex Way) until you reach the old church. Takes about 50 mins-1 hour. Dog waste bin near church and at junction with Essex Way.

From Colchester take B1505 Colchester Road through West Bergholt. At the far side of village there’s a brown info sign “Old Church” follow sign down Hall Road to the end and park near church.
