A cracking public common with gravel paths and woods all around lovely common grassland where cows, rabbits and deer roam freely. You can walk 5-6 miles around the whole place or there are cut throughs showing the small parts left of the old runway in the middle. What was a historic air base in both World wars, as well as infamous due to the women who protested all around it when it was a nuclear base, the old control tower has been made into a cafe that serves great coffee, cakes, savouries and more. There are strategic poo bins, small car parks around it and a main one by the tower and there is a large Dog lake for them to swim in. Plus we have the bunkers that were used in Star Wars - The Force Awakens. Just be aware if you have an escapee artist keep them on a lead in or near the woods at the Newbury end, as there are a couple of places they can get through to a road. But, the common is SO big this isn’t a problem in general. The area is of historic reference for many reasons, but as the base where the Eisenhower said goodbye to the American parachutists that flew to D-Day, there is an American war memorial. But despite all it’s war history it has been restored to be the peaceful people’s common it was originally. Car parks are free but they ask for donations to maintain the common.
Nature Reserve
This walk has been marked as a nature reserve. Dogs are usually welcome however restrictions may apply.
Each nature reserve has its own rules regarding dog walking, and some may not allow dogs. Kindly keep an eye out for the relevant signs within the reserve or visit the reserve's website before your visit for more information.
In most nature reserves, it's kindly requested to keep dogs on a lead at all times. Allowing dogs to roam off-lead can create issues or cause distress to livestock and wildlife.
If you see other visitors, please put your dog on lead whilst you are walking near them. Nature reserves are for the benefit of wildlife and frequently host educational visits.
Some nature reserves have dog poo bins, but if you can’t find one please take the waste home with you.
