About this walk
As The Ferry Tavern is in the middle of Spike Island Widnes and Sankey Valley Park Warrington I find it the best place to park as there is free parking and a dog friendly pub. From the Ferry Tavern you can choose which way you want to walk, Widnes or Warrington but both paths will be flat and about 4 miles until you reach nice open areas ideal for playing with your companion then walk back down to the dog friendly Tavern for refreshments for yourself before you leave. Very nice day out for a long walker.
All in all I'd say its a 10 mile walk depending how far around Spike Island or Sankey Valley Park you wish to go.

For the next three years or so there is a small diversion on the canal towpath towards Spike Island because of the Mersey Gateway Bridge works - it starts at the Carterhouse Swing bridge goes around onto the road at The Hive Cinema complex and back down onto Spike Island towards West Bank. Trans-Penine Trail Diversion signs are in place

This is the middle of the route from Spike Island Widnes to Sankey Valley Park, there are many stops along this canal where you can park depending on how far you want to walk. The Ferry Tavern is a dog friendly pub so i find this the best place to park.
