About this walk

Dogs are welcome on lead only at this English Heritage site, the remains of a motte and bailey castle from the 11th -13th centuries. Opening times given by English Heritage are 10am-6pm summer, 10am-4pm winter, closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. There is no charge for entry - but also no facilities of any kind on site, including no dog waste bins, although there are a few information boards. We went in February and although there hadn't been any rain for a few days, parts were rather slippery, so do use caution.

Parking is awkward; although a few spaces are available near the entrance, they were all filled on our visit - possibly because there seemed to be no parking restrictions or charges despite the adjacent train station that charges the usual high amounts for parking! We ended up parking in a fairly reasonable pay and display car park near Waitrose less than half a mile away (and quite a pleasant stroll along the canal part of the way).

Most of the ground is fairly flat but as long as the weather isn't too wet, you can also climb the motte (steps provided) for a lovely view over the town or up onto the banks to walk a complete circuit of the site (again, steps provided to climb up). The route around the banks is a little uneven in places.
