Hilly winding paths in the upper woods, where you may come across deer in the early hours, routes taking you across old forts and historic sites. The lower woods, separated by the main road, gives paths down to the river where doggos can swim in the iron rich waters and cool off on a hot day. Even their humans can pack a luck and swim in the river too! A full circuit, if you’re a fast paced walker, will take 1 hour and 40 mins. Doggos can be off lead in upper and lower and the woods are cornered off by stone walls and sheep fences. Be wary tho, deer are known to walk around the upper woods so if your dog is a runner, play it safe. Lower woods have a path that Leeds along the river and all the way to Grassington. My favourite place to take the dog in the Dales by far. Especially during lambing season when good off lead areas are sparse.
Come April and the bluebells cover the ground, you’ll be impressed by all the wild flowers and the wiggly paths that lace the woods. Each trip you can go a completely different way. Watch out for late June heat because the clegg will be out in full force.

Beautiful dog and photos, looks exactly the same as my own! Will definitely be trying out this walk, I’m only at Gargrave so it’s an easy run out in the car with my pup. Will look out for the other White Shepherd dog en route! -

We're a big fan of Gargrave! Gorgeous village and where my shepherd goes for his groom! Hope you enjoy the walk when you come 😊 -

Hi Is this walk safe enough to walk on your own? Thanks -

I always walk alone with my dog here and I either rarely run into anyone else or run into groups of walkers/locals. Never had any problems walking alone here so based off my own experience I would say it's safe -

Is the route easy enough to follow if you don’t mind the area well? Thanks

Location details
There is a small car park on the Upper Wood side (right hand side if you’re coming directly from Grassington) it’s difficult to spot so drive slowly. If that’s full you can also park along the road side by the Lower Wood side.
