There is a great network of public footpaths and bridleways in the vicinity of Fonthill Gifford and Fonthill Bishop (see map image). Although entry to the water is actively discouraged if you walk to the dam at the southern end of the lake, just beyond it is a fabulous shallow chalk stream for splashing around in. I suggest parking where the finger is pointing on my posted map. Fonthill is famous for its huge 18thC country house, long since demolished after it part collapsed! See link to find out more about that. The only visible remains of the abbey are the huge arch and urns at the north entrance to the estate, just off the B3089 at Fonthill Bishop.

Lovely walk! Quite muddy and the footpath isn't brilliantly signposted! Also livestock in fields along the footpath

15 miles W of Salisbury, off B3089 at Fonthill Bishop. There's a public road through the estate (you can drive through the arch!), heading south towards Fonthill Gifford and Tisbury. I've marked the parking place on one of my uploaded images.
