Nature Reserve
Think this walk belongs in nature reserve territory? Unleash your knowledge! Your tips help us guide fellow walkers and navigate any potential restrictions.
A small and slightly ugly walk to get to the reserve but well worth it when your there. Once you have crossed the railway line, dogs can be let off to run free. Great for birds and nature photography. Once over the big bridge, turn left and follow the river until the path splits. From here turn right and follow the path down until you reach a metal gate that says, Amwell Nature Reserve.
Pick up the path that runs parallel to the metal gate. Follow the path across the wooden bridges until you reach a wooden gate. Go through the gate, follow the path and you 10 min or so you will reach the Ash Valley. This area does have roaming cattle but they are fine with dogs and people. A stream runs all the way through the valley and is extremely fresh and clean.
Beautiful place, great for picnics and bird spotting. Woodpecker and buzzards especially.
A note from Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust:
Amwell Nature Reserve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is designated as it supports an high numbers of breeding birds during the summer months and is also of national importance for the numbers of wintering ducks. It is also very valuable for a wide range of other wildlife.
We do allow dogs around some areas of the site, on the main walkways. However there is no entry for dogs to the hides and around the dragonfly trail. We encourage that dogs are kept under control around the nature reserve to minimise disturbance to wildlife. Swimming within the reserve is strongly discouraged.
Nature Reserve
This walk has been marked as a nature reserve. Dogs are usually welcome however restrictions may apply.
Each nature reserve has its own rules regarding dog walking, and some may not allow dogs. Kindly keep an eye out for the relevant signs within the reserve or visit the reserve's website before your visit for more information.
In most nature reserves, it's kindly requested to keep dogs on a lead at all times. Allowing dogs to roam off-lead can create issues or cause distress to livestock and wildlife.
If you see other visitors, please put your dog on lead whilst you are walking near them. Nature reserves are for the benefit of wildlife and frequently host educational visits.
Some nature reserves have dog poo bins, but if you can’t find one please take the waste home with you.

Thank you for adding this walk. I have amended the incorrect county. (Our mistake!) Also a representative from Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust has provided some feedback on the area and these have now been included in the walk description. If anyone has any further questions regarding this walk please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. -

Utter garbage for a dog walk !! The reserve itself is nice but you can only walk down the river with your dog and the only thing way to circle the lake is to walk the main roads with no paths!! The one Access point is only open may to September and no dogs allowed great for bird watching. Waste of time for dogs -
