Rough wood is made up of a series of pools in the middle of the oldest and largest woodland in Walsall (Rough wood represents about 10% of the oak woodland within the West Midlands). Its a great place to go for a wander to lose yourself in nature for a while - the old oaks and lovely sunny clearings are full of wildlife, from nesting woodland birds, as well as toads, frogs, two species of newt, and lots of woodland insects. The site is separated from Bentley Haye (to the south) by the Wyrley and Essington Canal. Here at Countryside Services we work with British Waterways to survey the aquatic plants in the canal each summer.
Nature Reserve
This walk has been marked as a nature reserve. Dogs are usually welcome however restrictions may apply.
Each nature reserve has its own rules regarding dog walking, and some may not allow dogs. Kindly keep an eye out for the relevant signs within the reserve or visit the reserve's website before your visit for more information.
In most nature reserves, it's kindly requested to keep dogs on a lead at all times. Allowing dogs to roam off-lead can create issues or cause distress to livestock and wildlife.
If you see other visitors, please put your dog on lead whilst you are walking near them. Nature reserves are for the benefit of wildlife and frequently host educational visits.
Some nature reserves have dog poo bins, but if you can’t find one please take the waste home with you.

Great flat, woodlands, family dog walk. Canal lovely and clear with abundant wildlife. Could have done with lots of litter bins. Highly recommended. -

Lovely place to walk, had enough enclosed paths to walk off the lead peacefully and a bigger field to play ball. Easy to find with convenient parking. -
