In the unfortunately named village of Ugley, near Bishops Stortford, There's an Ugley Women's Institute, an Ugley pub, and an Ugley village hall. Ironically enough, the village is not at all ugly, and tucked away down Pound Lane is Linnets Wood.
Park in the lay-by with a bin in it, and enter the wood through the gate. Straight ahead is a small picnic area with a bench and a table, perfect for a little snack after your walk. Head left though, and walk down the path. It will take you down towards the woods. A path will appear to the left. Don't bother following it - it leads down to the main road. Keep following the path down the hill towards the wooded area. There are a number of paths you can then take through the woods. Some bring you out to a farmer's field, which you can walk the perimeter of, but we chose not to.
There are some lovely sights to see in the woods. We spotted rabbits, bluebells, and plenty of birds. Our dog darted in and out of the trees and had a great time.
I've ticked "On lead areas" because along certain parts of the route, only a hedgerow separates you from the road, and while the roads are quiet, the occasional speeder flies their car down the road at high speed.
It's not a long walk, but it's varied and quite easy, and a nice way to spend an hour or two.
